Scared

I saw a commercial today on television that advertised some upcoming police auctions in our area. I am terrified to think that if I bought something from one of their auctions that the owner it was taken from would come back to get it. How do I know that the merchandise that I am looking to purchase is not really wanted by a criminal who intends to get it back? Do the police do anything with the items when they confiscate them to make sure it is an unrecognizable item to anyone who may want it back? Do the items get resold in the same area as where it was taken?
