Breakup of common law marriage

Common law marriage is when two people live together for so long that the state considers them legally married. Laws vary from state to state. About 1/4 of our states including the District of Columbia have some sort of provision for common law marriage. If a common law marriage were to break up, rather than receiving alimony, a partner would receive palimony which is awarded in one lump sum rather than monthly payments. While not a great many states support common law marriage legally some will recognize the marriage if you moved there from a state where it was legal.
