Licking

My new puppy licks everything. He is a pit bull so I guess I am very lucky that he is just licking instead of using the rest of his mouth. I am worried though that the licking is a precursor to biting. I have read about crate training puppys and all of the bad behavior that it can help correct but will it do anything for the licking? Will it do anything for the biting? I love my puppy and he has such a sweet spirit, and I love the licking, but it is honestly quite gross and I want it to stop.
