Wilmington & Western Railroad, Delaware

One of the nicest ways to tour some of Delaware’s most beautiful countryside is on a Wilmington & Western Railroad excursion. Originally operated as a freight and passenger line starting in 1867, today this historic tourist railroad carries passengers on scenic tours of the stunning Red Clay Valley. The Wilmington & Western Railroad is owned an operated as a non-profit, historic railroad by Historic Red Clay Valley, Incorporated. Volunteers ensure visitors have a unique and memorable experience traveling via historic railroad equipment. The Wilmington & Western Railroad operates coal-burning steam and diesel locomotives, and travelers can ride in antique passenger coaches or on board self-propelled Pennsylvania Railroad “Doodlebug” railcars. The two regularly scheduled Wilmington & Western Railroad excursions include the Mt. Cuba Express and the Hockessin Express. The first consists of a 1 ½ hour round-trip ride through the beautiful Red Clay Valley with a ½ hour layover for a picnic at Mt. Cuba. The Hockessin Express takes passengers on a 2 ½ hour round-trip journey along the full length of the Wilmington & Western Railroad line.There are also many special event train excursions available on board the Wilmington & Western Railroad.
